Duanesburg is a small town in Schenectady County, New York, south and west of Schenectady. The family of Nathaniel Soley, a farmer, and his wife, Margaret raised 6 children there; their 2nd eldest was Laura, born in 1820. Laura made this handsome alphabet and family record sampler, which also portrays a fine large building with four chimneys and side wings. The windows are all detailed with mullions and the door is surrounded by side lights. The shingled roof is echoed by the patterned lawn.
Laura was 26 years old when she made this sampler. The 1850 census recorded the Soley family, with Laura still living with her parents. At some later point she married a toll gate keeper, Simon Fort, as his 2nd wife. By 1860 they were living east of Schenectady, in the village of Elisha's Kill, in Albany County and by 1870 they were joined by Laura's father, Nathaniel. In 1880 Laura and Simon were living in Schenectady proper.
This is a very pleasing sampler worked in red and blue silk, with the exception of the door to the house which is worked in green wool, on linen. It remains in excellent condition and has been conservation mounted into a molded and painted frame.
