A tightly worked band sampler made in 1740, this features an outstanding portrayal of a curly-haired young lady holding a flower. A great number of rows of alphabets and initials were worked, separated by fine narrow bands of eyelet, satin and queen-stitches. Interestingly, the lettering continues down the sides and indeed upside-down along the pictorial panel. Along the bottom of the sampler, it is inscribed, "EH my age is yers 1740," and, "God Bles King Georg," appears bordering the panel. King George II reigned from 1727 to 1760; he was a Hanoverian king and spoke no English, hence the Germanic spelling of his name.
The young lady depicted on this sampler is wearing a dress that was the height of fashion in the early 18th century. The bodice is an elongated cone shape, emphasized by a triangular stomacher, with sleeves that are cuffed at the elbows. Her waist is narrow and her striped skirt is partially covered by a decorative short apron.
Deftly worked spot motifs provide further decoration. The sampler was worked in silk on linen and is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in a late black and gold frame.
