We occasionally encounter appliqué, stuffed and embroidered pictures in shadowbox frames, but rarely one as delightful as this rendering of a bullfinch perched on a basket of strawberries. The focus, of course, is the richly colored bird but details such as the pairs of cherries joined at their stems and the stylish scroll contribute greatly to the composition. Delicate stitches form the feathers on the bird, the seeds of the strawberries, the veins of the leaves and the woven basket. The bird and berries are stuffed and the dimension adds greatly to the work. It is quite deep, with the interior walls measuring almost one inch.

It was worked with wool stitches onto felted wool and the ground fabric was painted a brilliant, deep golden yellow. In excellent condition, it is in its fine original oval shadowbox frame made of carved pearwood.
